<br />
Some door improvements cost a lot of money. For example, if you decided to completely replace your door, that's going to be a heavy investment. Other improvements, such as weatherstripping, are easy and inexpensive.<br />
<br />
Here's what you need to know about installing energy-efficient doors.<br />
<br />
<b>1. What Kind of Door Should You Choose?</b><br />
<br />
There are primarily three types of doors you can choose from: wood, steel and fiberglass.<br />
<br />
However, if you want to conserve the maximum amount of energy possible, the best kind of door you can choose is a steel door that's wrapped in wood. <br />
<br />
This kind of door will give you the great look that a wooden door does, while giving you maximum insulating power.<br />
<br />
<b>2. Weatherstripping: Is More Important Than the Door</b><br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container zemanta-img" style="float: right; margin-right: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Storm_door.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: clear:right;"><img alt="English: common aluminum and glass residential..." border="0" class="zemanta-img-inserted zemanta-img-configured" height="400" src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/b6/Storm_door.jpg/350px-Storm_door.jpg" style="border: medium none; font-size: 0.8em;" width="265" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption zemanta-img-attribution" style="text-align: center; width: 270px;">(Photo credit: <a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Storm_door.jpg" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Even more important than the door are the areas around the door. <br />
<br />
Most heat in the door area doesn't escape from passing through the door. Instead, it escapes through the gaps under the door or the seams on the side of the door.<br />
<br />
As a rule of thumb, if you can slide a piece of paper anywhere from inside the house to the outside of the house with the door closed, you have a serious air and energy leak.<br />
<br />
Weatherstripping is the process of sealing up these gaps to make sure no heat or coolness escapes to the outside. You do this by sealing the bottom of the door and the seams along the door.<br />
<br />
Weatherstripping costs much, much less than buying a new door and can have a much bigger effect. You can even do it yourself by going down to Home Depot and buying the weatherstripping supplies you need.<br />
<br />
<b>3. Understanding "R Value</b>"<br />
<br />
One final thing to understand about door energy conservation is "R Value."<br />
<br />
Your R Value is how heat resistant the glass on your door is. If you have a door panel, glass doors or even just decorative glass on your door, a lot of heat can escape through that glass.<br />
<br />
The higher the R Value, the less heat escapes. When you're buying your door, make sure you take your R value into account.<br />
<br />
If everything else in your house is designed to conserve heat but your door has a low R value, you might want to consider getting the glass replaced.<br />
<br />
Choosing, installing and leak-proofing your door can take several weeks. Remember that all the effort you put into it will pay off in energy saving in the future. You'll also be helping reduce your environmental footprint by using less energy.<br />

During summer, it can help keep the heat out and the cool air in. During winter, it can help keep the heat in and maximize the heating rays of the sun.<br />
<br />
However, the effects of different climates means that people need to position and install their windows differently to take advantage of solar windows' various properties.<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container zemanta-img" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Hidden_Villa_Education_Center_2010.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: clear:right;"><img alt="English: Novel construction of Education Cente..." border="0" class="zemanta-img-inserted zemanta-img-configured" height="202" src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/09/Hidden_Villa_Education_Center_2010.jpg/350px-Hidden_Villa_Education_Center_2010.jpg" style="border: medium none; font-size: 0.8em;" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption zemanta-img-attribution" style="text-align: center; width: 300px;">Shaded windows keep the heat out in warmer climates. (Photo credit: <a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Hidden_Villa_Education_Center_2010.jpg" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<b>1. Passive Solar Windows for Hot and Sunny Climates</b><br />
<br />
In hot and sunny climates, glazed windows should be installed towards the south of the house.<br />
<br />
This allows the windows to collect heat when the sun is low in the sky during the day. That means the house won't overheat by allowing the sun's rays into the house during peak hours.<br />
<br />
You can also use a number of shielding devices such as awnings or overhangs to prevent overheating during summer.<br />
<br />
Other windows in the house can still be installed, but they should have a shade or glaze installed so they let less light into the house. Having north facing windows in a hot and sunny climate can also lead to overheating.<br />
<br />
<b>2. Passive Solar Windows for Cool Climates</b><br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container zemanta-img" style="float: right; margin-right: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Illust_passive_solar_d2_319pxW.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: clear:right;"><img alt="Passive solar design using an unvented trombe ..." border="0" class="zemanta-img-inserted zemanta-img-configured" height="263" src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3d/Illust_passive_solar_d2_319pxW.gif" style="border: medium none; font-size: 0.8em;" width="319" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption zemanta-img-attribution" style="text-align: center; width: 319px;">Passive solar design using an unvented trombe wall and summer shading (Photo credit: <a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Illust_passive_solar_d2_319pxW.gif" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
There are two main strategies for heating up a home with passive solar windows in cold climates: trombe walls and using a greenhouse methodology.<br />
<br />
A trombe wall is a big wall, usually painted black, which allows you to absorb heat into the house without heat leaking out.<br />
<br />
The main concern with using a big window is that while the sun's rays can come into the home and heat up the air, the glass conducts heat so well that it can all escape back through the glass.<br />
<br />
The trombe wall solves this issue by trapping the heated air between the glass and the trombe wall, then circulating it into the house before the heat has a chance to escape through the glass. <br />
<br />
The greenhouse approach uses similar technology to a greenhouse to keep heated air in the house. You use a large number of windows to let the sun's rays into your house, then you use a controlled timer to circulate the air within your house in a way that optimizes the heat and reduces the amount of heat that escapes through the same glass windows that let the heat in.<br />
<br />
<b> Are Passive Solar Windows for You?</b><br />
<br />
Passive solar windows can work for both hot and cold climates, whether there's a lot of sun or just a little bit of sun.<br />
<br />
To determine whether or not your home qualifies for passive solar windows, talk to an environmental contractor in your area. Make sure you get several different opinions to get a definitive sense of whether or not it's worth the investment, as they can be pricey - but they can also save you a lot - especially on heating bills - in the long run.<br />

<br />
Did you know that lighting costs account for about 25% of the average American's energy bill? That cost, when multiplied over a year, becomes an astronomical figure!<br />
<br />
CFL and LED light bulbs have helped change that. Using energy saving technology, you can reduce your energy bill by 1/3rd to 1/25th of your original lighting costs.<br />
<br />
Though LED lights used to be incredibly expensive, breakthroughs over the last few years have brought their cost down dramatically. Today, they're a better value than both CFL and everyday light bulbs.<br />
<br />
Here are some of the many benefits of energy-efficient LEDs.<br />
<ul>
<li><b>Generates Twenty Times Less Heat</b></li>
</ul>
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container zemanta-img" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Incandescent_light_bulb.svg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: clear:right;"><img alt="Diagram showing the major parts of a modern in..." border="0" class="zemanta-img-inserted zemanta-img-configured" height="220" src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/62/Incandescent_light_bulb.svg/350px-Incandescent_light_bulb.svg.png" style="border: medium none; font-size: 0.8em;" width="200" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption zemanta-img-attribution" style="text-align: center; width: 200px;">Diagram showing the major parts of a modern incandescent light bulb. (Photo credit: <a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Incandescent_light_bulb.svg" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Heat energy is dissipated from an average light bulb. That heat energy uses up electricity to generate itself, energy that you're paying for.<br />
<br />
In addition, many Americans then have to spend even more electricity to cool their homes in part because of the heat generated from light bulbs.<br />
<br />
LEDs on the other hand generate almost no heat - twenty times less than a standard light bulb.<br />
<ul>
<li><b> Much Longer Lasting </b></li>
</ul>
A regular light bulb works by heating up a filament in an oxygen-free environment. Unfortunately, the light bulb dies when the filament burns out.<br />
<br />
An LED light on the other hand has no filament. As a result, they last much longer.<br />
<br />
A good LED light can last as much as ten times longer than the average light bulb.<br />
<ul>
<li><b> Reduced Lifetime Costs</b></li>
</ul>
The standard light bulb costs five to ten times more in energy than its upfront costs. <br />
<br />
An LED light on the other hand costs more upfront, but conserves a lot more energy in the long run.<br />
<br />
In terms of total dollars invested over its lifetime, LED lights are a better value than standard light bulbs and even CFL light bulbs.<br />
<ul>
<li><b>Better for the Environment</b></li>
</ul>
Standard light bulbs are terrible for the environment because mercury is used in the manufacturing process.<br />
<br />
The chemical waste problem is compounded by the sheer volume of light bulbs that need to be produced. <br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container zemanta-img" style="float: right; margin-right: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:LED_bulbs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: clear:right;"><img alt="English: A selection of commercially available..." border="0" class="zemanta-img-inserted zemanta-img-configured" height="181" src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/76/LED_bulbs.jpg/350px-LED_bulbs.jpg" style="border: medium none; font-size: 0.8em;" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption zemanta-img-attribution" style="text-align: center; width: 300px;">A selection of commercially available LED light bulbs. (Photo credit: <a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:LED_bulbs.jpg" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Because standard light bulbs burn out so often and need to be replaced, the waste the standard household produces is astronomical.<br />
<br />
CFLs last a lot longer than standard florescent light bulbs, but they still contain mercury - in even slightly higher amounts.<br />
<br />
LED lights are much better for the environment, because no mercury is used in the production process. You also need to replace them much less often, which means less waste.<br />
<br />
These are some of the many benefits of energy-efficient LEDs.<br />
<br />
And replacing the light bulbs in your home is as easy as noting the wattage and going down to your local hardware store to buy LED lights. <br />
<br />
There are quite a few choices you can choose from. You can get diffused bulbs, which take the concentrated light and turn it into a more spread out kind of light. You can get high power diffused, which are similar to 100 watt standard bulbs. You can also get them in track lighting, spotlight and floodlight forms.<br />

There are a few simple things you can do that'll make your home more green literally overnight with very little effort.<br />
<br />
Here are a few simple improvements you can make for a greener home.<br />
<br />
<b>1. Invest in Auto-Off Lights</b><br />
<br />
Getting a light switch system that automatically turns off is a great way to save energy and help the environment.<br />
<br />
This is an especially good idea if you have a hard time remembering to turn off the light or have children who aren't in the habit of turning the lights off (and who doesn't?) :-)<br />
<br />
<b>2. Purchase Energy Saving Light Bulbs</b><br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container zemanta-img" style="float: right; margin-right: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Compact-Fluorescent-Bulb.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: clear:right;"><img alt="English: Compact fluorescent light bulb" border="0" class="zemanta-img-inserted zemanta-img-configured" height="200" src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/c3/Compact-Fluorescent-Bulb.jpg/350px-Compact-Fluorescent-Bulb.jpg" style="border: medium none; font-size: 0.8em;" width="181" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption zemanta-img-attribution" style="text-align: center; width: 190px;">Energy-saving compact fluorescent light bulb. (Photo credit: <a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Compact-Fluorescent-Bulb.jpg" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Energy saving light bulbs use much less energy than the typical light bulb. They generate less heat and produce just as much light as your typical light bulb.<br />
<br />
Yes, they are slightly more expensive than a run-of-the-mill light bulb. However, if you care about going green, this is a really simple way to do so - and they can last 5-20 times as long, so you actually save a lot of money in the long run! CFLs and LEDs are two types of energy-saving bulbs you can find just about anywhere these days.<br />
<br />
<b>3. Use Water Conserving Shower Heads</b><br />
<br />
Water conserving shower heads are very affordable, easy to install and can help you save a lot of money on your water bills.<br />
<br />
Essentially what they do is inject air inside the streams of water. It still feels like you're getting a full blast of water on your body when you shower, but you're actually using a lot less water. I absolutely love mine!<br />
<br />
<b>4. Improve Your House's Insulation</b><br />
<br />
Improving your home's insulation can save you a lot of energy in the long run. It might take a bit of upfront investment, but it'll easily pay for itself.<br />
<br />
Insulation will help you keep the heat in during winter and the heat out in summer. It'll help you reduce both your air conditioning and heating bills.<br />
<br />
Different kinds of homes and different climates work best with different kinds of insulation. Talk to a local expert to figure out your exact cost to benefit ratio.<br />
<img alt="" border="0" src="http://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=newholliv-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B0004JKKJI" height="1" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /><b> </b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0004JKKJI/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0004JKKJI&linkCode=as2&tag=newholliv-20&linkId=MV2ILX4SSPHF3UW6" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjagTxbUxXREjU2Rdje1bzdr7go73M2IOvRM9RUpE_0y0mLYQdycSS5e3XLeG2jxUdEdX70qjnbNI3NoUSV0ZfPT4i_2UbAMjL__gjvrgjiJRDOdY6hVzOta8rQ8yzM816nol20IPoNDCe4/s1600/21eNcEXJzoL._SL250_.jpg" /></a></div>
<b>5. Use Green Products Wherever Possible</b><br />
<br />
There are many places you can opt to go green in your house. You can buy eco-friendly biodegradable dishwashing soap instead of commercial detergents. You can buy organic soap and shampoo in your local Whole Foods instead of mass produced soap.<br />
<br />
You can buy biodegradable plastics instead of plastics that clog up landfills. You can buy products made from recyclable products or which are themselves recyclable, instead of products that contribute to our unsustainable waste growth.<br />
<br />
These are just some of the many ways you can go green. Just about every room in your house can benefit from going green. Often going green means not only helping the environment, but also saving money for your family. It takes a little bit of effort in the beginning to set up your home properly, but the rewards more than justify the effort in the long run.<br />

A lot of consumers use off-the-shelf
commercial products to clean their laundry. Sometimes the choice is
made based on the least expensive laundry product, or the product
offering a coupon for the week.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Laundry is listed as one of the least
favorite chores, and the fact is that no one really likes to do laundry,
but everyone loves to have clean, fresh smelling clothes. But by
using laundry solutions that contain synthetic ingredients, you’re
cleaning your clothes in harmful chemicals.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
These chemicals don’t always come out
in the rinse cycle. Then if you toss the clothes into the dryer and
add a chemically treated dryer sheet or you use a liquid fabric
softener, you’re adding even more chemicals! Laundry cleaning
solutions are one of the top causes of skin allergies and eye
irritants.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container zemanta-img" style="float: right; margin-right: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Clothes_hanging_to_dry.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: clear:right;"><img alt="This is probably the world's biggest laundry m..." border="0" class="zemanta-img-inserted zemanta-img-configured" height="213" src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/7e/Clothes_hanging_to_dry.jpg/350px-Clothes_hanging_to_dry.jpg" style="border: medium none; font-size: 0.8em;" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption zemanta-img-attribution" style="text-align: center; width: 300px;">Clean laundry drying in the sun. (Photo credit: <a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Clothes_hanging_to_dry.jpg" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
But by choosing to go the more natural
way and use organic or natural products, you won’t miss out on that freshly
laundered smell and appearance. You’re still going to have clothes
that look their best and smell great, too. What you <i>will</i> miss out on
are the things that aren’t healthy for your body or the
environment.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
You can use laundry cleaning
solutions you make at home, but this is time consuming and if you’re
just getting started with using natural cleaners, it’ll take some
time before you get the hang of making the mixture.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
An easy way to go natural and save time
is to use a <a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=as_li_ss_tl?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&field-keywords=natural%20laundry%20detergent&linkCode=ur2&sprefix=natural%20laundry%2Caps%2C297&tag=newholliv-20&url=search-alias%3Daps&linkId=YBGTXWJ2KPYKXAY7" target="_blank"><u>ready-made natural or organic laundry cleaner</u>.</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="https://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=newholliv-20&l=ur2&o=1" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /> Not all laundry
cleaners that claim to be natural really are, so you’ll have to
check the ingredients carefully. The natural or organic cleaners that are best for both you and your
clothes will say that they’re without any synthetic dyes, and they
won’t contain any phosphates.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Look for laundry detergents that say
that they’re free from chlorine chemicals. Also look for labels
that say the product is hypoallergenic, and the ingredients are based
on plants and not on synthetics. You can buy concentrated natural laundry
detergents in larger containers to save money. Many have great, natural scents. (My favorite is <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00569EE0M/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00569EE0M&linkCode=as2&tag=newholliv-20&linkId=XIAQ2LV7WL6MKSA7"><u>Earth Friendly Products Ecos Lemongrass</u></a> - I've been using it for years and it works wonderfully and smells great!)</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
To whiten clothes, especially clothes
that have stains, you can use Borax to treat them. If you have sweat
stains on shirts, put some vinegar in a spray bottle and cover the
stain with the vinegar. Let sit a few minutes, then launder.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
For clothing that needs to be
pretreated for stains like an ink stain, you can put the clothing in
vinegar. The smell isn’t all that great while it’s soaking, but
it does come out in the wash and the vinegar will remove the ink
stain. Vinegar is also an excellent stain remover to rid clothes of
tomato-based stains.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Once you’ve pretreated any stains,
just wash the clothes in a natural or organic detergent for a healthier way to
clean your laundry that’s better for your health and safer for the
environment! </div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">

Food is the center of many of life’s
celebrations, but at the end of the celebrating, when all the guests
are heading home, the clean up has to begin. Doing the dishes,
whether you put them in a dishwasher or wash them by hand, takes up a
lot of time. And depending on what you use to aid in the cleaning up,
the products you use may be environmentally unfriendly and unsafe for
your skin.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Natural and organic cleaners are safe and effective for every task you
need to do - so that means you don’t have to skip using natural substances to clean your dishes, regardless of whether you choose to
wash them by hand or load them in a dishwasher.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
There are a lot of <a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=as_li_ss_tl?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&field-keywords=natural%20dish%20soap&linkCode=ur2&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Anatural%20dish%20soap&sprefix=natural%20dish%2Caps%2C251&tag=newholliv-20&url=search-alias%3Daps&linkId=YBHHJUN7GHQ3FSS2" target="_blank"><u>natural dish cleaners</u></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="https://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=newholliv-20&l=ur2&o=1" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" />
that can give your dishes sparkle and get them shiny clean. If you use a dishwasher, you can buy <a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=as_li_ss_tl?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&field-keywords=natural%20dishwasher%20pods&linkCode=ur2&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Anatural%20dishwasher%20pods&sprefix=natural%20dishw%2Caps%2C260&tag=newholliv-20&url=search-alias%3Daps&linkId=NIDL3WLXLLJT6S7B" target="_blank"><u>natural cleaning pods</u></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="https://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=newholliv-20&l=ur2&o=1" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /> that come with
delightful fragrances like lemon or thyme. This scent can give your entire
kitchen a fresh smell - while still being safe for everyone.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container zemanta-img" style="float: right; margin-right: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Dishwasher_with_dishes.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: clear:right;"><img alt="A dishwasher containing clean dishes" border="0" class="zemanta-img-inserted zemanta-img-configured" height="240" src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/e0/Dishwasher_with_dishes.JPG/350px-Dishwasher_with_dishes.JPG" style="border: medium none; font-size: 0.8em;" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption zemanta-img-attribution" style="text-align: center; width: 300px;">A dishwasher load of clean dishes. (Photo credit: <a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Dishwasher_with_dishes.JPG" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Because natural ingredients are often better
at cleaning than chemicals, you might not need to use as much of the product
when you do your dishes. Look for <a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=as_li_ss_tl?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&field-keywords=natural%20dishwasher%20detergent&linkCode=ur2&sprefix=natural%20dish%2Caps%2C569&tag=newholliv-20&url=search-alias%3Daps&linkId=S4YGFSAY5WTCZUWC" target="_blank"><u>organic dishwashing detergents</u></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="https://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=newholliv-20&l=ur2&o=1" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /> that
don’t have any chlorine or phosphate in them.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Organic and naturally based cleaners can make a greasy
clean up job a lot easier by cutting through the grease. And if you
get the pre-measured dishwasher pods, this even cuts back on time spent
in the kitchen, too. All you have to do is stick one into the
dishwasher - no time needed to measure and no chance of accidentally
overfilling the soap dish.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
If you want to hand wash the dishes,
then using natural soap won’t just clean your dishes without
unsightly spots, but the soap is often better for your hands, too. Find
one that contains aloe vera or chamomile to soothe your skin.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Instead of using dishwasher detergent
that has synthetic scents and colors, use ones that have citrus
extracts like lemon so that your kitchen is instantly refreshed after
you cook a meal with strong odors.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
You can even make an effective cleaner yourself
just by using a mix of borax and baking soda with an essential oil scent of
your choice. This may not have the beautiful color and suds that you
had when you used store-bought dishwasher detergent, but you also
won’t be putting anything harmful down your drain.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Make sure you play around with the do-it-yourself recipes for organic cleaners to find a formulation that works, because we all have different levels of hardness to our water. And watch how your
skin reacts to the ingredients, too. Just because it's all-natural doesn't mean you can't have an allergic reaction. Depending on the ingredients, and your personal sensitivities, you still might need to wear gloves
while cleaning.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>

Cleaning the oven isn’t high
on anyone’s joy list, but it’s a task that has to be done in
order to have a clean oven, and get rid of any spillage so you don’t
run the risk of starting an oven fire.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
There are many oven cleaners on the
market that advertise how quickly they cut through grease and clean
your oven. While they do clean the appliance, it’s what these
cleaners <i>don’t</i> tell you that matters.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
You won’t hear that the fumes from
these cleaners can permeate your entire home and can cause coughing
and watery eyes - and even more serious side effects for some people. You also won’t hear that the ingredients are
caustic. Caustic means that the ingredients can cause painful skin
burns.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container zemanta-img" style="float: right; margin-right: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Oven.agr.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: clear:right;"><img alt="Interior of a modern oven" border="0" class="zemanta-img-inserted zemanta-img-configured" height="224" src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/ba/Oven.agr.jpg/350px-Oven.agr.jpg" style="border: medium none; font-size: 0.8em;" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption zemanta-img-attribution" style="text-align: center; width: 350px;">Dirty oven. (Photo credit: <a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Oven.agr.jpg" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Natural oven cleaning methods are safer
to use in your home and you won’t have to worry about damaging your
skin or breathing in a caustic substance. If you need to clean your
oven and want to use what you have around the house to do it, then
you can use citrus fruits like lemons.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
But this is more of a time consuming
task because even using lemons, you’ll still have to scrub - and if
you have a stuck on mess, you may end up needing something to scrape
off burned on food spills.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
You can also use white vinegar to clean
an oven, but for the scrubbing action, you’ll need to use it in
conjunction with baking soda. Even then, depending on the shape your
oven is in, you’ll still have to put some effort into scrubbing it
clean.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Both of these methods will work to get
your oven clean, but they do take up a lot of time and since time is
a precious commodity to most of us, you may prefer to look for faster,
just as effective methods.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
To do that, you can use a <a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=as_li_ss_tl?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&field-keywords=natural%20oven%20cleaner&linkCode=ur2&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Anatural%20oven%20cleaner&sprefix=natural%20ov%2Caps%2C311&tag=newholliv-20&url=search-alias%3Daps&linkId=RLDV5CBVEEKJK742" target="_blank"><u>natural oven cleaner</u></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="https://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=newholliv-20&l=ur2&o=1" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /> that’s designed to break apart food spills and cut through
grease. You can find these natural oven cleaners in handy spray
bottles available through online suppliers such as <a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=as_li_ss_tl?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&field-keywords=natural%20oven%20cleaner&linkCode=ur2&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Anatural%20oven%20cleaner&sprefix=natural%20ov%2Caps%2C311&tag=newholliv-20&url=search-alias%3Daps&linkId=RLDV5CBVEEKJK742" target="_blank"><u>Amazon.com</u></a> and many others.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Because they’re natural or organic, they’re
safe to use in all types of ovens, including countertop versions. By
using only the natural ingredients in these formulas to clean your
oven, you won’t be dealing with any of the dangerous fumes, either.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Unlike the other chemical based
cleaners that require you to saturate the oven and then wait half an
hour before cleaning, with a natural cleaner, you can spray the oven
- and because the cleaner works fast, you can wipe it down in minutes
without having to wait as long. These natural oven cleaners are also great
for cleaning barbecue grills, too! </div>

The floors in your home handle a lot of
foot traffic, and if you have pets, you can also add paw traffic. It’s no wonder that floors can be
tough to keep clean.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Besides foot traffic, there’s human
hair, pet hair, dust and anything tracked in from the outside that
can build up. Plus, you also have to take care of any accidental
spills, and make sure you get up liquids that stain the floor. Some
stains get ground in and can be tougher to get out if you didn’t
know they had occurred.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
It’s easy to buy into the belief that
using a steam cleaner is the only way to truly clean carpets. And you
might also think that chemical cleaners are the best product to use
on wood or tile flooring, but you would be wrong.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Many commercial floor cleaners have too many dangerous
chemicals to use in your home, and the water used after a chemical
steam cleaning ends up in the sewer system, while the
non-biodegradable containers end up in the landfill. Not only are
these chemicals bad for you and the earth, they don’t do the best
job at cleaning, either.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
You want floors that are safe and clean
enough to walk on barefoot, and you also want floors clean enough for
your children to be able to sit on or crawl on - especially if you have little
infants learning how to navigate the world.<br />
<br />
Luckily, there are a number of <a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=as_li_ss_tl?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&field-keywords=natural%20floor%20cleaner&linkCode=ur2&sprefix=natural%20floor%20cleaner%2Caps%2C215&tag=newholliv-20&url=search-alias%3Daps&linkId=JZUPE7ZEEIMJ4L55" target="_blank"><u>natural floor cleaning products</u></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="https://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=newholliv-20&l=ur2&o=1" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /> available that are much safer for you and your family. </div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Starting with carpets, you’ll first
want to use a <a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=as_li_ss_tl?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&field-keywords=natural%20carpet%20stain%20remover&linkCode=ur2&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Anatural%20carpet%20stain%20remover&tag=newholliv-20&url=search-alias%3Daps&linkId=A5PADHFZRPO3RZP3" target="_blank"><u>natural stain remover</u>.</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="https://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=newholliv-20&l=ur2&o=1" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /> You can find organic stain
removers that don’t have any fumes, so there’s no chemical odors,
and they don’t contain toxins so they’re great for the
environment, too.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Once you’ve gone over any stains on
the carpet, you can apply the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=as_li_ss_tl?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&field-keywords=natural%20carpet%20cleaner&linkCode=ur2&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Anatural%20carpet%20cleaner&tag=newholliv-20&url=search-alias%3Daps&linkId=ENDCOWOOGX6ZKNFH" target="_blank"><u>carpet cleaner</u>.</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="https://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=newholliv-20&l=ur2&o=1" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /> Most organic cleaners
are concentrated so a little bit can keep your carpets looking new all
year long.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Even if you use a carpet-cleaning
machine that doesn’t use heat, organic carpet cleaners will still
work for you. Some of the carpet cleaners can be specially mixed in a
small dish and used as a stain remover, so you can even skip the
pretreatment of stains depending on the brand you get. Look for
cleaners that have soap bark and great smelling natural scents like sage.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
For tile floors, get a cleaner that’s
multi-purpose and contains linseed oil. This is safe to use on marble
flooring as well. If you have <a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=as_li_ss_tl?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&field-keywords=natural%20hardwood%20floor%20cleaner&linkCode=ur2&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Anatural%20hardwood%20floor%20cleaner&tag=newholliv-20&url=search-alias%3Daps&linkId=GFHTTM2W6GR5BO47" target="_blank"><u>hardwood flooring</u>,</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="https://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=newholliv-20&l=ur2&o=1" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /> make sure the
organic cleaner you buy specifically lists hardwood flooring, because
not all organic ingredients are suitable for hardwood.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Some organic cleaners will contain
vinegar and an essential oil, which are good for cleaning and shining wood
floors. For any floor polishes that you use, make sure they’re
vegetable based. </div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">

<a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=as_li_ss_tl?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&field-keywords=natural%20floor%20cleaner&linkCode=ur2&sprefix=natural%20floor%20cleaner%2Caps%2C215&tag=newholliv-20&url=search-alias%3Daps&linkId=JZUPE7ZEEIMJ4L55" target="_blank"><u><b>Some Healthy & Safe Natural Floor Cleaners:</b></u></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="https://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=newholliv-20&l=ur2&o=1" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" />

Once most people go through a detox and feel better, they’re a lot more determined to take care of their body. <br />
<br />
When you live a clean lifestyle, you understand the importance of eating as healthy as possible, exercising and staying on track to good health. Acupuncture is something that can work with your detox program as well as help you continue to feel better once you're finished. <br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container zemanta-img" style="float: right; margin-right: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Tradional_healthcare_acupuncture.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: clear:right;"><img alt="Tradional healthcare acupuncture" border="0" class="zemanta-img-inserted zemanta-img-configured" height="320" src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/3/31/Tradional_healthcare_acupuncture.JPG/350px-Tradional_healthcare_acupuncture.JPG" style="border: medium none; font-size: 0.8em;" width="180" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption zemanta-img-attribution" style="text-align: center; width: 180px;">Traditional healthcare acupuncture (Photo credit: <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Tradional_healthcare_acupuncture.JPG" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
There are many reasons for this, with one being that acupuncture can help with mental detoxification as well as physical detoxification. You can practice acupuncture with a certified acupuncturist, or even in the comfort of your own home.<br />
<br />
Any time you begin a detoxification program, you may experience some symptoms because of the toxins leaving your body. You might feel differently and not as comfortable if you use a detox plan that completely changes the way that you would normally eat. <br />
<br />
Your body sometimes gets stuck in a rut with how you eat and live. When you shake that up, it throws your body out of its normal routine, even if that "normal" is plagued with toxins and not all that healthy.<br />
<br />
When going through a detox plan, some people will experience some bowel discomfort such as gas and bloating. You might experience some diarrhea or constipation. <br />
<br />
Headaches, muscle aches and fatigue can also be associated with a detox plan. This is because your body has become accustomed to the presence of these toxins and has adjusted to the way they impact your health. <br />
<br />
As the toxins are cleansed from your body, you will go through a resetting period and you’ll feel various side effects. Acupuncture can help those side effects not be as intrusive - as well as help the detox itself work better. <br />
<br />
What this form of alternative treatment does is restore your body’s balance - the balance that the toxins take from you. The body is a wonderfully crafted thing and it can fight off a host of infections, bacteria, viruses and more when it’s in good health!<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container zemanta-img" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Acupuncture1-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: clear:right;"><img alt="English: Basic Acupuncture." border="0" class="zemanta-img-inserted zemanta-img-configured" height="200" src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/0d/Acupuncture1-1.jpg/350px-Acupuncture1-1.jpg" style="border: medium none; font-size: 0.8em;" width="190" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption zemanta-img-attribution" style="text-align: center; width: 190px;">Basic Acupuncture. (Photo credit: <a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Acupuncture1-1.jpg" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
But the minute your body is out of balance, it creates a disconnect between your mind and body. Acupuncture returns this balance - and with it, returns your natural restorative health powers to your body. <br />
<br />
Acupuncture works with detoxification and your body’s own immune system to help you feel whole again. And it does so much more than that. Acupuncture can help alleviate some of the symptoms that are caused by toxins. It can relieve allergies caused by environmental toxins, boost the immune system and stop headaches related to toxins.<br />
<br />
These are just a few of the benefits waiting for you when you combine acupuncture with your detox lifestyle.<br />

But thanks to the ultra-convenient lifestyles of today, sweating isn’t something that a lot of people do on a regular basis. <br />
<br />
We go from air conditioned homes to air conditioned vehicles to air conditioned offices and shopping places. But this lack of sweating can cause your body to keep toxins trapped inside, which is another cause for increased toxic load in modern society. <br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container zemanta-img" style="float: right; margin-right: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Sweating.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: clear:right;"><img alt="sweating" border="0" class="zemanta-img-inserted zemanta-img-configured" height="240" src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/d5/Sweating.jpg/350px-Sweating.jpg" style="border: medium none; font-size: 0.8em;" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption zemanta-img-attribution" style="text-align: center; width: 300px;">Sweating (Photo credit: <a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Sweating.jpg" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Toxins enter the body one of two ways - either through the mouth or through the skin. When you sweat, your body expels some of the toxins and can help prevent a build up. Sweating opens up your pores to let the body release toxins. Not only do you feel better and look better, but your skin will also look younger and healthier!<br />
<br />
Using a sauna can be a good way to help increase sweating and eliminate toxins from your body, because a sauna causes you to sweat a lot more than you normally would.* If you could check what your sweat contains, you’d see that it probably contains a lot of toxins - including airborne ones like pesticides that are sprayed in homes and on plants. <br />
<br />
In a sauna, your body also works to release toxins that have been stored in the tissues. It basically forces them loose and then eliminates them. Studies have shown that saunas are effective in detoxification based on the amount of sweat your body will produce at the higher temperature. <br />
<br />
Your body will get rid of toxins like uric acid, which is a waste product - and a toxin. If uric acid builds up in the body, it can lead to things like kidney problems. Not only can saunas help your body detoxify itself of uric acid, but also from toxins from metals, chemicals, household cleaners, and from any medications that you take or put on your skin. <br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container zemanta-img" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Infraszauna_001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: clear:right;"><img alt="The interior of an infrared sauna." border="0" class="zemanta-img-inserted zemanta-img-configured" height="320" src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a3/Infraszauna_001.jpg/350px-Infraszauna_001.jpg" style="border: medium none; font-size: 0.8em;" width="239" /></a></td></tr>

</tbody></table>
When you use a sauna, your heart rate also increases - and this is a good thing.* A faster heart rate will increase blood flow. The increase in blood flow will help push toxins out of your body faster. <br />
<br />
Not only that, but there’s a correlation between the temperature of the sauna and the benefit it gives your immune system. When you get a fever, it raises your body temperature to kill off whatever is making you sick. <br />
<br />
In a sauna, the increased temperature helps your body fight things that can make you sick. It used to be that if you wanted the detoxification benefit from using a sauna, you had to leave your house to go to one. <br />
<br />
But today, you can <a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=as_li_ss_tl?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&fst=as%3Aoff&keywords=personal%20sauna&linkCode=ur2&qid=1430591240&rh=n%3A2475549011%2Ck%3Apersonal%20sauna&rnid=2941120011&tag=newholliv-20&linkId=JHDV3GJXVXSMMTLH" target="_blank"><u>buy a sauna</u></a> that you can use right in the comfort of your own home - and they’re affordable. These toxins have the potential to negatively impact your health - and some can even build up to the point where they can shorten your life!*<br />
<br />
Many people assume that they have a few toxins, but they don’t realize that just by living in your home and going about your daily life, you ingest thousands of different toxins. <br />

</tbody></table>
Toxins can be a number of things - but especially chemicals. These chemicals come from your mattress, cleaning products, your floors, the foods that you eat and the things you drink - and even the air you breathe. <br />
<br />
When you ingest toxins in some way, your body has natural processes in place to remove these toxins as a way of protecting itself. For example, your body may get rid of toxins by secreting them through your kidneys. <br />
<br />
As the build up continues, it tries to rid these toxins by expelling them as waste material and pushing them to leach out through the skin. Unfortunately, in today's chemical-filled world, it often happens that these toxins are so numerous, and the build up can be so great, that the body can’t eliminate them all without some help. <br />
<br />
That’s why detoxing can help. By detoxing, you can eliminate a build up, boost your health and improve your immune system. One of the ways that you can do this is by using a <i>chelation</i> detoxing process. <br />
<br />
Doctors use chelation therapy to rid a patient’s body of heavy metal toxins in particular. The patient receives EDTA or Ethylene-diamine-tetra-acetic acid through an IV and has to return for numerous visits. <br />
<br />
Fortunately, there’s a more natural way that you can use chelation to detoxify your body. This natural chelation process is a combination of cilantro and chlorella. <br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container zemanta-img" style="float: right; margin-right: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Cilantro-alsterdrache.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: clear:right;"><img alt="English: Fresh Cilantro (Coriander) Deutsch: V..." border="0" class="zemanta-img-inserted zemanta-img-configured" height="280" src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/2e/Cilantro-alsterdrache.jpg/350px-Cilantro-alsterdrache.jpg" style="border: medium none; font-size: 0.8em;" width="240" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption zemanta-img-attribution" style="text-align: center; width: 240px;">Fresh Cilantro (Coriander). (Photo credit: <a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Cilantro-alsterdrache.jpg" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Cilantro, also called coriander, is an herb from the parsley family and has been used for medicinal purposes, as well as in cooking. It has antioxidant properties as well as essential oil, and is rich in fiber. <br />
<br />
This herb is believed to improve health and fight disease. It’s an anti-inflammatory and is helpful in helping the body get rid of mercury toxins.<br />
<br />
Chlorella is fresh water alga. It contains antioxidants, vitamin C, iron and B vitamins. <br />
<br />
It works to remove toxins from the body because it contains chlorophyll. This is what you see when you look at green plants. Chlorophyll is the pigment. What it does for humans when used as part of a detox plan is eliminate metals from the body and from the bloodstream through a binding process. <br />
<br />
You can find chlorella at health food stores in various forms. It’s used in a combination chelation process with cilantro. Both of these are natural living substances that can help cleanse and detoxify your body naturally, without the harmful side effects of many harsher cleanses.<br />

It handles many thousands of tasks each day - many of which you’re completely unaware of. When something isn’t right, your body will start sending you warning messages. <br />
<br />
The problem is that not many people understand that these warning messages come in the form of symptoms. When there’s an issue, your body tries to get you to address it by causing something to hurt, to swell, or by taking up more energy than it normally would. <br />
<br />
Far too many people ignore these messages in the form of symptoms until they reach a point where they feel too poorly to keep up with the tasks involved in their day-to-day living. <br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container zemanta-img" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><div class="zemanta-img">

</td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption zemanta-img-attribution" style="text-align: center; width: 200px;">Toxic. (Photo credit: <a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Skull_and_crossbones.svg" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
One of the reasons that your body can start sending out warning messages is because it can reach a point where toxins build up, leading to toxicity. By the time you reach that point, you’ll feel pretty bad!<br />
<br />
You can do a lot to help your body stay in good health by checking to see if your mind or body have been showing symptoms commonly associated with a toxin build up (also called toxic load). <br />
<br />
In the mind, the number one symptom is mental fog. When this happens, you’ll begin to experience trouble with the way that you think. You’ll lack the clarity that you once had. <br />
<br />
At first, you might not even notice that your mind isn’t as quick as it used to be but as time passes and toxins continue to build up, the mental fog will only grow worse. <br />
<br />
Mental fog can vary from one person to the next, depending on the level of toxins you’ve been exposed to and how your body reacts to those toxins. What can be kind of frustrating is that testing for toxins isn’t easy. In fact, many lab tests will come back within normal parameters when you actually do have a problem, because they're not really testing for the things that are causing the problems..<br />
<br />
Your body will also show symptoms of fatigue when you have a build up of toxins in your body. This fatigue can reach the point where it leaves you unable to function. This type of fatigue is often attributed to other conditions, rather than looking at your toxic load. <br />
<br />
When toxins stay in your body, over time, it takes away your energy stores and that’s why you feel drained of energy. Your body can only handle so much and when your toxic load is high, your system tries to get rid of them, but unfortunately, it often can’t keep up with the volume of toxins we’re exposed to on a daily basis in the modern post-industrial world. <br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.newholisticliving.com/request-free-detox-e-book-b.html" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" target="_blank"><img alt="http://www.newholisticliving.com/request-free-detox-e-book-b.html" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjW6OlSCETVsaYimMWP7uyhTuristasfRRiOtvdXId80_xyEr_YtWOgouhowDHdd62_koZ5_wtJ_74PXz0bNVSJKptHWT0zAc5gSRxHyPef1MaFABr85qtpgOKw8KBQJ8QNLSZx2wNp7Whd/s1600/detox_scams_3Dcover-sm.png" height="200" width="165" /></a></td></tr>

</tbody></table>
That’s why your body needs a detox. When you go through a detox plan, you can cleanse your body of all these toxins, even if the toxins have built up over time. You can restore clarity of mind and get the energy that you lost back. However, you need to do this the right way.<br />
<br />
Some "cleanses" and detoxification programs can actually cause additional stress to the body - which is not helpful. This month, we'll be discussing some ways to cleanse and detoxify your system gently, and naturally reduce your toxic load. Be sure to check back next week, when we'll be discussing one of the best little-known ways to rid your body of toxins naturally!<br />

Driving a car creates pollution, supports the toxic petroleum industry, congests roads, and all in all adds to the environmental problems of the world.<br />
<br />
Here are some of the many benefits of going green with your transportation, along with a few tips for making the transition:<br />
<br />
<b>1. Decreased Congestion Means Less Gas</b><br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container zemanta-img" style="float: right; margin-right: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Trafficjamdelhi.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: clear:right;"><img alt="English: Traffic Jam in Delhi Français : Un em..." border="0" class="zemanta-img-inserted zemanta-img-configured" height="240" src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/24/Trafficjamdelhi.jpg/350px-Trafficjamdelhi.jpg" style="border: medium none; font-size: 0.8em;" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption zemanta-img-attribution" style="text-align: center; width: 300px;">(Photo credit: <a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Trafficjamdelhi.jpg" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The more cars we take off the road, the less congested the roads will be. The less congested the roads are, the less gas each individual car will consume.<br />
<br />
Not only are you lowering your gas consumption by not driving a car, you're also making other cars on the road more fuel efficient by not driving.<br />
<br />
<b>2. Voting with Your Wallet</b><br />
<br />
It's one thing to say you support environmentalism. It's another thing to vote with your wallet.<br />
<br />
When you stop spending money on gas-guzzling vehicles, you take your vote out of the automobile industry. You're also increasing the amount of money public transit is earning, which in time translates to better, more fuel efficient public transportation systems.<br />
<br />
<b>3. Get Exercise without Trying</b><br />
<br />
A lot of people have a hard time regularly scheduling exercise into their daily routines. <br />
<br />
Getting in the habit of riding a bicycle or walking to take public transportation makes it easy to get your exercise in every day. You're either walking more or cycling or both.<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container zemanta-img" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Piggybank.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: clear:right;"><img alt="English: Saving for a sabbatical, a car repair..." border="0" class="zemanta-img-inserted zemanta-img-configured" height="212" src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/e7/Piggybank.jpg/350px-Piggybank.jpg" style="border: medium none; font-size: 0.8em;" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption zemanta-img-attribution" style="text-align: center; width: 300px;">(Photo credit: <a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Piggybank.jpg" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<b>4. Save a Lot of Money</b><br />
<br />
Driving a car costs a lot of money. You have your gas costs, which can add up to hundreds of dollars a month. In addition you have automotive repair and maintenance, which can also add up to a lot of money every year.<br />
<br />
That's not even taking into account the actual cost of the car. Generally you're spending several hundred dollars a month on a car loan or lease. If you're buying a car outright, you're often tying up tens of thousands of dollars of your net worth.<br />
<br />
All in all, not owning a car can save you buckets of money.<br />
<br />
<b>Tips for Making the Transition</b><br />
<br />
The most important thing for making the transition smoothly is to plan how you need to get to the various places in your daily life before you make the switch.<br />
<br />
If you already know how to get everywhere you want to get and how long it'll take, that'll take a lot of the difficulty out of the picture.<br />
<br />
Learn to use Google Maps or a smartphone app to check bus routes and public transportation routes for areas that you're not familiar with traveling to.<br />
<br />
For the first couple weeks, leave a little earlier than you think you need to so you can get used to the system while still being on time.<br />
<br />
Going green with your transportation allows you to save money, reduce the world's pollution, help improve public transportation and even get some exercise - it's a win-win for everyone!<br />

Coming up with new ways to use old things is a creative process that can be a real blast. Especially when it works! You'll have something real that you can touch and use that others would have thrown away.<br />
<br />
Here are a few fun and unusual ways to reuse household items.<br />
<br />
<b>1. Make Your Own Sprinkler System</b><br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container zemanta-img" style="float: right; margin-right: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Gardenhose.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: clear:right;"><img alt="English: garden hose Deutsch: Gartenschlauch" border="0" class="zemanta-img-inserted zemanta-img-configured" height="212" src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/6f/Gardenhose.JPG/350px-Gardenhose.JPG" style="border: medium none; font-size: 0.8em;" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption zemanta-img-attribution" style="text-align: center; width: 300px;">Old garden hose. (Photo credit: <a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Gardenhose.JPG" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Don't throw away your old garden hoses, even if they leak! Instead, seal off one end of the garden hose with cement, melted plastic or glue. Then poke holes throughout the rest of the garden hose.<br />
<br />
You now have a soaker hose! Thread this hose throughout your garden and turn on the water. Your new soaker hose will spray water throughout your garden while you barely lift a finger.<br />
<br />
<b>2. Make Your Own Fridge Magnets</b><br />
<br />
Instead of throwing away your bottle caps, save them up. Go to your local stationary store or eBay and buy a pack of small magnets.<br />
<br />
Then grab your bottle caps and glue the magnet to the back. Congratulations! You now have home-made fridge magnets that look really neat!<br />
<br />
There are a lot of things you can use besides bottle caps. Your creativity is the only limitation.<br />
<br />
<b>3. Make Your Own Drink Coasters</b><br />
<br />
Do you have old CDs lying around that you'll probably never use? Instead of just throwing them away, why not turn them into unique drink coasters?<br />
<br />
There are many ways you can do this. You can paint over them then laminate them. You can melt the surface of the CD to create unique textures. You could sand the surface of the CD in uneven shapes to create an interesting effect.<br />
<br />
Don't be afraid to experiment - chances are, you've got a lot of these lying around.<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container zemanta-img" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:BallBlue.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: clear:right;"><img alt="English: "Ball blue" aqua glass home..." border="0" class="zemanta-img-inserted zemanta-img-configured" height="320" src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/c8/BallBlue.jpg/350px-BallBlue.jpg" style="border: medium none; font-size: 0.8em;" width="203" /></a></td></tr>

</tbody></table>
<b>4. Make Your Own Lamp</b><br />
<br />
Take your used glass bottles and make your own lamp. From your neighborhood shop, just buy a small light that can be inserted into the bottle. Thread it in, then turn it on.<br />
<br />
To get even more creative, you can use a light coating of paint on the outside to change the light's colors. You can use several different colors to create a multi-colored light that'll really impress your friends.<br />
<br />
<b>5. Turn Your Shoes into a Playground</b><br />
<br />
Did you know that you can send Nike your old shoes and they'll turn them into a playground? They'll literally take your old shoes and melt them down in a safe way, then use the plastic to build playgrounds.<br />
<br />
These are a few fun and creative ways you can reuse household items. Unlike buying a lamp or a soaker hose, you'll get to look at these items and know that YOU made them! You get to express your creativity while feeling the pride that comes with making something new, all while doing good things for the planet.<br />

It is difficult to imagine how one person can make a change in the environment when there are billions of people on this planet. <br />
<br />
Yet each small part does make a difference. Think about it this way - one tree over the course of its lifetime will remove 600 pounds of carbon dioxide. One small tree makes a significant difference in the cleanliness of the air you breathe and you can make a big difference too. Here’s how:<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container zemanta-img" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Aerosol_1943.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: clear:right;"><img alt="The aerosol(A gaseous suspension of fine solid..." border="0" class="zemanta-img-inserted zemanta-img-configured" height="300" src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/dd/Aerosol_1943.jpg/350px-Aerosol_1943.jpg" style="border: medium none; font-size: 0.8em;" width="200" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption zemanta-img-attribution" style="text-align: center; width: 200px;">The aerosol spray canister invented by USDA researchers. (Photo credit: <a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Aerosol_1943.jpg" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<b>1. Paint Your Home With Latex</b> – Oil-based paints contain solvents that are released into the air and cause pollution. Latex paints are water-based and safer.<br />
<br />
<b>2. Stop Buying Aerosols</b> – Many things come with a propellant. From hair spray to cooking spray, each requires a propellant to release from the can. These propellants release harmful gases. They’re not great for your health and they’re certainly not good for the environment. Use pump sprays instead.<br />
<br />
<b>3. Unplug & Turn Off</b> – When you’re not using an appliance, unplug it. This includes electronic devices too. And turn off lights in your home when you’re not using them. In fact, try to watch less television and use electronics less. You might decide to designate an afternoon or an entire day as a day to “unplug” and not use any electronics for entertainment (Hint: Earth Day is next Tuesday!). Read a book. Go for a walk. Enjoy a game or time with your family.<br />
<br />
<b>4. Recycle</b> – Recycling is something that is so easy to do. Even if your community doesn’t offer a recycling pick up, you can make a weekly, or even monthly, habit of driving to the recycling center to drop off your materials. You’ll be amazed how much you save from the landfill when you recycle.<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container zemanta-img" style="float: right; margin-right: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Earth_recycle.svg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: clear:right;"><img alt="Crystal earth recycle icon" border="0" class="zemanta-img-inserted zemanta-img-configured" height="151" src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/28/Earth_recycle.svg/145px-Earth_recycle.svg.png" style="border: medium none; font-size: 0.8em;" width="145" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption zemanta-img-attribution" style="text-align: center; width: 145px;">(Photo credit: <a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Earth_recycle.svg" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<b>5. Use Environmentally Friendly Cleaners</b> – To be fair, not all “green” cleaners work as well as you’d like them to. However, there are some amazing brands and truly effective and “green” cleaners. Read reviews. Find the products that fit your needs, and clean your home without harsh and harmful chemicals. We often offer suggestions on this blog, or check out our <a href="http://www.newholisticliving.com/recommended-products-for-detox--green-living.html" target="_blank"><u>Green Living Products page</u></a> on our website for some excellent suggestions.<br />
<br />
<b>6. Wash In Cold Water</b> – Most washable items do not need to be washed in hot or warm water. When possible, use cold water. It requires less energy from your water heater and is usually better for your clothing too.<br />
<br />
<b>7. Buy Organic Whenever Possible</b> – Organic crops are crops that are not treated with harmful chemicals. They’re better for your health too. However, we realize it’s not always feasible to buy organic all the time. Check into the "Dirty Dozen," which includes items like apples and strawberries which have a heavy use of pesticides and other chemicals. <br />
<br />
Cotton is another product that should ideally be organic. The cotton industry is one of the most harmful industries. “Cotton covers 55% of the world's cultivated land and uses 75% of the world's insecticides, more than any other single major crop.” <i>(Source: Organic Trade Association)</i><br />
<br />
You really can make a difference in the world around you. Small changes to your habits and your lifestyle do have an impact. In honor of Earth Day next week, why not choose at least one or two of these tips, and put them into practice this month! <br />

Did you know that accelerating increases emissions? It does. If you can maintain a steady speed you’ll reduce emissions. The key is to strive to reduce the energy your car needs to maintain your speed. So if you drive a manual transmission, then try to use the highest possible gear at the lowest RPM. If you drive an automatic, generally your car will attempt to optimize and work most efficiently automatically, but you can help by not having a "lead foot," and letting your car gradually accelerate and shift down naturally.<br />
<br />
<b>Rule #2: Anticipate Traffic </b><br />
<br />
If you are able to anticipate traffic flow, you’ll be better able to maintain speed and conserve fuel as well. For example, if you see that the light is about to change, you can let your foot off of the accelerator - meaning you’re saving fuel. Anticipate it correctly, and you may be able to reduce your need to accelerate too much as well. Stomping on the accelerator or the brake both cause you to use more fuel than is absolutely necessary. <br />
<br />
<b>Rule #3: Keep Your Tires Inflated</b><br />
<br />
It takes more energy for your car to move on underinflated tires. Think about trying to ride a bike with low tires. It takes you more energy to just push the pedals around. When they’re fully inflated, it’s much easier. The same is true for your car. Keep your tires properly inflated and you’ll use less fuel.<br />
<br />
<b>Rule #4: Keep It Streamlined</b><br />
<br />
The boxier your car, the more air resistance there is. That means it takes more energy to move forward. Streamlined and aerodynamic cars tend to get better gas mileage. While no one is asking you to buy a new, more aerodynamic car, you can reduce resistance by not adding unnecessary external cargo to your car, or strapping bulky items to the outside of your car such as bikes. <br />
<br />
<b>Rule #5: Shift Early</b><br />
<br />
Finally, instead of waiting for your manual transmission to redline before shifting, shift early. This keeps your RPMs low and helps reduce fuel consumption. Again, if you drive a car with an automatic transmission your car generally strives to shift when it’s optimal. If you drive a manual transmission then you get to decide when to shift. Shifting around 2000 RPM instead of 3000 or 4000 saves gas and cuts back on emissions. <br />
<br />
The golden rules of eco driving aren’t difficult to follow. Pay attention to your surroundings so you can maintain your speed. Don’t be in such a hurry and take good care of your car. <br />

For example, do you purchase the oranges grown in California or the ones grown in Costa Rica? Do you idle the car while you wait to pick someone up or do you turn the car off? There are simple things you can do every day to make a difference. Here are just a few to consider and remember.<br />
<br />
<b>Eat More Vegetables</b><br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container zemanta-img" style="float: right; margin-right: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Ecologically_grown_vegetables.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: clear:right;"><img alt="Eesti: Maheköögivili" border="0" class="zemanta-img-inserted zemanta-img-configured" height="240" src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/fa/Ecologically_grown_vegetables.jpg/350px-Ecologically_grown_vegetables.jpg" style="border: medium none; font-size: 0.8em;" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption zemanta-img-attribution" style="text-align: center; width: 300px;">(Photo credit: <a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Ecologically_grown_vegetables.jpg" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Livestock produces a significant amount of methane gas. And the care and keeping of livestock requires an abundance of resources and energy. Vegetables, and fruits, don’t require as much energy and they’re generally better for you. <br />
<br />
Additionally, if you buy <i>locally grown</i> organic vegetables and other produce, you’re taking huge strides to improve the environment because there are no harsh chemicals used to grow organic food, and locally grown produce doesn’t need to travel across the country to get to your dinner table.<br />
<br />
<b>Use a Car Share</b><br />
<br />
Car shares are membership programs. You pay a monthly fee and borrow a car from the fleet whenever you need it. They’re fantastic because you don’t have to worry about the daily expense of insurance, parking, and car maintenance. You only pay for the gas you use and the cost of car shares is usually quite affordable.<br />
<br />
<b>Get a Reusable Coffee Mug</b><br />
<br />
How many cups of take-out coffee, or tea, do you drink each week? If you’re like many Americans you may consume 3-5 cups of coffee-shop coffee on a weekly basis. Simply buying a reusable coffee mug and refilling it can save tons of garbage from finding its way into landfills. You don’t have to give up your coffee habit to be an everyday environmentalist.<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container zemanta-img" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Blue_reusable_shopping_bag.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: clear:right;"><img alt="English: Reusable shopping bag" border="0" class="zemanta-img-inserted zemanta-img-configured" height="213" src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/c5/Blue_reusable_shopping_bag.JPG/350px-Blue_reusable_shopping_bag.JPG" style="border: medium none; font-size: 0.8em;" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption zemanta-img-attribution" style="text-align: center; width: 300px;">Reusable shopping bag (Photo credit: <a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Blue_reusable_shopping_bag.JPG" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<b>Reuse Shopping Bags</b><br />
Stop bringing home all of those plastic shopping bags! They’re made from petroleum products and they don’t break down in landfills. And paper bags aren’t much better. Trees are cut down to make those bags and trees are what we need to continuously clean the air. Not to mention the amount of energy it takes to make one paper bag. <br />
<br />
Instead, purchase a few reusable cloth shopping bags. Wash them weekly when you wash your towels or sheets; you’ll keep your food germ free and the environment will be in much better shape.<br />
<br />
<b>Turn It Off</b><br />
<br />
Did you know that if you if you leave your computer on 24 hours a day, it could be responsible for releasing up to 1,500 pounds of CO2 into the atmosphere every year (www.nature.org)? Turn off lights and other electronics when they’re not in use as well. It makes a big difference.<br />
<br />
It doesn’t take much to become an everyday environmentalist. Simply think about how your actions affect the planet and then make the best choice possible - for yourself and future generations.<br />

The ph miracle diet basically is a cleansing diet. It performs a cleansing of the body and its tissues and organs. This cleansing is almost like setting the “restart” button on your body. Any conditions you have developed from improper diet and lifestyle will start to dissipate. Many claim that cleansing diets like the pH miracle diet will help give your body the nutritional support it needs to function at an optimum level.*<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container zemanta-img" style="float: right; margin-right: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Liver_%28transparent%29.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: clear:right;"><img alt="English: Organ available for use in the Human ..." border="0" class="zemanta-img-inserted zemanta-img-configured" height="199" src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/69/Liver_%28transparent%29.png" style="border: medium none; font-size: 0.8em;" width="283" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption zemanta-img-attribution" style="text-align: center; width: 283px;">The liver: the body's main detoxifying organ. (Photo credit: <a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Liver_%28transparent%29.png" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
To understand what a cleansing diet is you need to understand how the body cleanses itself. The body rids itself of harmful elements through the colon, skin, lungs and bladder. The liver, kidneys and lymphatic system all assist with this cleansing. The liver is the organ in the body that is primarily responsible for body detoxification. When the liver is not functioning properly it cannot change toxins like alcohol, nicotine, caffeine, pesticides, drugs, antibiotics and additives into waste matter. If your liver doesn’t work, you are poisoning yourself. The liver can become stressed through improper digestion (eating processed foods), yeast overgrowth, parasites, dehydration and inadequate water intake. <br />
<br />
Cleansing your liver is the best thing you can do for your health and for the restoration of proper pH to your body. When you undergo a program, like the pH miracle diet that cleanses the liver it normally requires the liver to work harder than it has before. You must add live enzymes to the diet rather than drawing them from the liver. The live enzymes will alkalize the body and restore your proper pH. You can accomplish this by incorporating organic vegetables into your diet. The proper alkalizing vegetables in the pH miracle diet will support the liver and help restore it to its natural functioning. <br />
<br />
If the liver is helped by a cleansing diet, then the whole body will be helped. Once the liver is functioning at proper performance it can begin to do its job of eliminating waste. It will support the other detoxifying organs and perform more effectively in doing its own job. <br />
<br />
The pH miracle diet qualifies as a cleansing diet because it performs a cleansing function of the liver and the rest of your body. The diet is made of mostly raw foods, simple proteins (beans and legumes), alternative whole grains and plenty of fresh and pure water. Cleansing diets include, at minimum, five servings of vegetables per day. In most cases, people eat twice that when they are on the pH miracle diet. This is often accomplished with the use of fresh vegetable juices. There are four to five servings of vegetables in just two cups of juiced vegetables. <br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container zemanta-img" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Thai_market_vegetables_01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: clear:right;"><img alt="English: Fresh herbs, fresh spices and vegetab..." border="0" class="zemanta-img-inserted zemanta-img-configured" height="213" src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/5c/Thai_market_vegetables_01.jpg/350px-Thai_market_vegetables_01.jpg" style="border: medium none; font-size: 0.8em;" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption zemanta-img-attribution" style="text-align: center; width: 300px;">Fresh herbs, vegetables & spices. (Photo credit: <a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Thai_market_vegetables_01.jpg" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Eating small and frequent meals is also an important part of the cleansing function of the pH miracle diet. The small meals will keep calorie intake up and give you the opportunity to add more vegetables to your day. Although raw vegetables should be favored, lightly steamed veggies are also beneficial. Plant based proteins like beans and nuts should also be included at each small meal for energy and balance.<br />
<br />
The effects of the pH miracle cleansing diet depend entirely on your previous level of health. If you’ve had a diet that consisted of sugars, meats, processed foods and other acid forming choices then the cleansing effects may be very difficult at first. Your body will have to adjust to living off of natural elements instead of chemical ones. However your efforts are well worth it. You will be learning the most natural way to eat and teaching your body to live to eat instead of eat to live. Remember that learning to eat in this manner and adopting a cleansing diet will be a process of healing, and not an overnight occurrence. As you take on aspects of the pH miracle diet, you will begin to change your health for the better.<br />

The recently popular <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0446556181/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0446556181&linkCode=as2&tag=newholliv-20&linkId=7C25OE7ZRXHZBSS3" target="_blank">pH miracle diet</a> is no different. As the program has gained followers, it has gained just as much criticism from different individuals.<br />
<br />
The main criticism of the diet is that it encourages people to become vegetarians and vegans. Critics say that this diet, particularly with its omission of dairy products (a vegetarian protein source), is dangerously low in protein. However, this criticism comes from the common misconception that humans need massive amounts of protein. The recent popularity of low-carb/high protein diets has re-cemented this myth in the mind of many people. Health has become equivalent with eating red meat and dairy. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0446556181/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0446556181&linkCode=as2&tag=newholliv-20&linkId=7C25OE7ZRXHZBSS3" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?_encoding=UTF8&ASIN=0446556181&Format=_SL250_&ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=newholliv-20" /></a><img alt="" border="0" src="http://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=newholliv-20&l=as2&o=1&a=0446556181" height="1" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" />
However, there are many sources of natural and healthy proteins that don’t have the harmful acidic effects of red meat and conventionally raised dairy products. The truth is, most people get too much protein and not too little. Women require about 45 grams of protein per day, and men need 55 grams. Beans contain at least 8 grams of protein per half cup, and leafy greens like kale, and some seeds like quinoa also contain quite a bit of protein. So it is really quite easy to get enough protein on a vegetarian diet.<br />
<br />
Another criticism related to this issue is calcium. Many people equate drinking milk with strong bones. However, American women consume an average of two pounds of milk per day and yet 30 million of them develop osteoporosis. If drinking milk helped make bones stronger, then the opposite would be true. A study conducted by Cornell-trained nutritionist Amy Joy Lanou showed that there was no specific link between dairy products and bone health in children and young adults. There are plenty of sources of calcium available in the alkalizing food categories that will provide protection against osteoporosis - and eliminating acidic sources such as sugar and processed foods will help with this as well.<br />
<br />
Many critics also claim that the emphasis on vegetables and fresh foods is the real reason behind the success that people receive from the diet - and indeed this is a large factor. The pH miracle diet suggests eating almost 70 percent vegetables and acceptable fruits. At this level, whether you are eating alkalizing foods or not, anyone will have an improvement in health. Critics disregard the importance of the pH balance of the diet. <br />
<br />
However, there have been many people who have experienced great results - for example - after eliminating wheat, an acidic food. Wheat is not a food that one normally associates with ill health, however, eliminating wheat has been a godsend to many people who have suffered the symptoms of over-acidified diets. The amount of alkalizing vegetables in the diet will definitely do anybody good, whether or not they take the rest of the diet to heart. By eating from the list of alkaline foods, you will be improving your health no matter how strict you are on the diet.<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container zemanta-img" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Colorful_Photo_of_Vegetables.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: clear:right;"><img alt="Fresh vegetables are important components of a..." border="0" class="zemanta-img-inserted zemanta-img-configured" height="160" src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/0/01/Colorful_Photo_of_Vegetables.png/350px-Colorful_Photo_of_Vegetables.png" style="border: medium none; font-size: 0.8em;" width="200" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption zemanta-img-attribution" style="text-align: center; width: 200px;">Fresh vegetables are important components of the pH miracle diet. (Photo credit: <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Colorful_Photo_of_Vegetables.png" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
This leads to another popular criticism of the book. Many people claim that the pH miracle diet program is too strict for daily life. The elimination of common foods like animal protein, milk and wheat seems overwhelming for people. They cannot fathom going through a whole day without eating something from one of these foods groups. The idea of sticking to a diet that is primarily plant based seems too rigid and strict. However, many people who use the pH miracle diet have seen beneficial results without being 100% strict with the rules of the diet. <br />
<br />
Like with many other diets, the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0446556181/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0446556181&linkCode=as2&tag=newholliv-20&linkId=7C25OE7ZRXHZBSS3" target="_blank">pH miracle diet</a> outlines steps toward better health. The emphasis here is on steps. It is unreasonable to expect anyone to do a complete 180-degree change in his or her eating habits overnight. Taking a slower approach to changing your diet will create longer and more successful results. If the diet is followed word for word, it is difficult at first because people are so used to eating a certain way. With time and practice though, you can move toward better health and a more pH balanced diet - and you can still include small amounts of your favorite foods like cleanly raised healthy meats and dairy products if you wish.<br />

But just how hard is it to eat an alkaline diet?<br />
<br />
Increasing your intake of alkaline foods does not have to be extraordinarily difficult, and one
does not have to cut acidic foods entirely from his or her diet. <br />
<br />
It is recommended that your diet consist of around 80% alkaline food sources while acidic foods make up the remaining 20%. <br />
<br />
This
is in stark contrast to the average diet in America, which often flips
that ratio around. Here are some changes in your diet which can be made
quickly and easily in order to correct your pH level.<br />
<br />
<b>1. Swap Coffee For Green Tea</b><br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container zemanta-img" style="float: right; margin-right: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Cup_of_green_tea_and_tea_pot_on_table.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: clear:right;"><img alt="This time it's green tea." border="0" class="zemanta-img-inserted zemanta-img-configured" height="213" src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/ae/Cup_of_green_tea_and_tea_pot_on_table.jpg/350px-Cup_of_green_tea_and_tea_pot_on_table.jpg" style="border: medium none; font-size: 0.8em;" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption zemanta-img-attribution" style="text-align: center; width: 300px;">Green tea time. (Photo credit: <a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Cup_of_green_tea_and_tea_pot_on_table.jpg" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
One
great example is you might switch from coffee to green tea in order to
bring your blood’s pH level higher. Green tea is alkaline while coffee
is highly acidic, so the substitution may make a drastic change for your
health, especially if you consume coffee quite often. This is a change which any Zen master will definitely approve of, and green tea contains many healthy antioxidants as well. <br />
<br />
<b>2. Choose Alkalizing Vegetables</b><br />
<br />
I'm
sure you've heard how important it is to eat your vegetables, but some
vegetables are more alkalizing than others. Some particularly alkalizing
varieties are broccoli, celery, chard greens, collard greens, cucumber,
cauliflower, and mushrooms, just to name a few. These foods are
alkaline and will not only help reduce stress on the body in fighting
acid, but they are also highly nutrient dense and just plain good for
you! <br />
<br />
<b>3. Choose Alkalizing Fruits</b><br />
<br />
Some of the best
fruits are also alkalizing ones, including, melons, lemons, oranges,
peaches, pears, apples, bananas, berries, cantaloupe and grapes.<br />
<br />
Remember,
you do not have to all eliminate dairy products, rice, and protein from
animal sources in order to maintain a healthy pH level. <br />
<br />
However,
it will definitely benefit you to substitute commonly consumed refined
sugars and starches with healthy fruits and vegetables more often than
not. <br />
<br />
According to those in the alkaline camp, making these simple
changes in your diet, along with drinking plenty of green tea, will help
increase pH levels and naturally improve your health.<br />

Some natural health experts deplore the average American diet on the basis that it includes many foods which are too acidic to effectively promote and maintain a healthy body. <br />
<br />
Some examples of these acidic sources we consume are refined sugars, dairy products, and meat, such as beef and pork. <br />
<br />
These experts feel there are many different side effects that result from a high-acid diet, such as a diminished immune system, increased incidence of disease, and fatigue and lack of energy. <br />
<br />
We all know that a sugar high can feel good every once in a while when eating Rocky Road ice cream, but unless you attempt to alkalize your body afterwards, you run the risk of a crash as a result. <br />
<br />
Alkalizing the body is not difficult, but, in order to understand the benefits of doing so, one must first understand the definition of alkaline foods, how they work with the body, and which foods in particular will counteract the effects of their acidic counterparts. <br />
<br />
<b>What Is Alkaline?</b><br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container zemanta-img" style="float: right; margin-right: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:PH_scale.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: clear:right;"><img alt="pH scale showing common substances" border="0" class="zemanta-img-inserted zemanta-img-configured" height="305" src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/46/PH_scale.png/350px-PH_scale.png" style="border: medium none; font-size: 0.8em;" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption zemanta-img-attribution" style="text-align: center; width: 320px;">pH scale showing common substances (Photo credit: <a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:PH_scale.png" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Alkaline is defined as that which has a pH greater than 7. Because the body functions best at a pH level of about 7.4, it is important to consume foods which will keep your blood at an appropriate pH level.<br />
<br />
This is especially crucial when consuming foods which are acidic, and, which, will bring those levels lower than they should be. <br />
<br />
Pure, distilled water sits at almost exactly 7 on the pH scale. Foods with a higher number are alkaline, while anything that is lower than 7 is considered acidic. <br />
<br />
<b>Supposed Benefits Of An Alkaline Diet</b><br />
<br />
As a general rule, foods can be classified as either acid-forming or alkaline forming. <br />
<br />
The human body‘s pH is 7.35, or slightly alkaline. The body is always seeking a state of homeostasis (balance) and it works hard to maintain the healthy neutral alkaline zone. <br />
<br />
Now, keep in mind that foods in and of themselves cannot change alkalinity in the body, but, the body does have to work extra hard to compensate for the intake of acid-forming foods that are ingested in excess. <br />
<br />
This happens because when your diet is highly acidic the body will often leech calcium from the bones, as calcium is an alkalizing mineral. Over time this can lead to bone mineral loss, which, can result in osteoporosis.<br />
<br />
Additionally, as a stressor it can lead to inflammation along with increased cortisol levels, and this can impact overall health in the long term.<br />
<br />
Conversely, those foods that are alkaline forming are typically plant based and highly nutrient dense, and also loaded with antioxidants. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00E39SCMC/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00E39SCMC&linkCode=as2&tag=newholliv-20&linkId=RJ3RNBXSEEXMUQRU" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?_encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B00E39SCMC&Format=_SL250_&ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=newholliv-20" /></a><img alt="" border="0" src="http://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=newholliv-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B00E39SCMC" height="1" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" />
Including a variety of alkaline-forming foods in your diet slows the leeching of calcium from the bones, and this results in improved bone health.<br />
<br />
These foods also support healthy cell regeneration and fight the effects of free-radicals on the body.<br />
<br />
Since it is the pH level of blood which concerns us, putting additional acidic foods into our diets actually works against the human system. When more strain is put on the body to fight sickness and disease, it is no wonder a highly acidic diet might make one feel tired and lethargic.<br />
<br />
<b>Benefits Of Alkaline Forming Foods For Athletes And Exercise</b><br />
<br />
Alkalizing foods have can also have major benefits for athletes and for the human body in general during exercise. <br />
<br />
A diet high in acid-forming foods results in reduction of muscle efficiency, so more energy expenditure is needed for each and every muscle contraction. Now, during a race or intense activity, this means a lot of extra work for the body.<br />
<br />
Since alkaline-forming foods greatly reduce inflammation, the muscles work at more functional levels, and they also require less force to move. <br />
<br />
This allows endurance athletes, such as, those who run marathons and participate in triathlons to push harder for longer. For those who do strength training, and bodybuilders, some say that alkalizing foods will allow you to lift heavier weights with less negative stress on the body. <br />
<br />
But how do you eat a more alkaline diet? How do you know which foods to choose, and which to avoid? Just check back next week, when we'll share 3 simple tips for making your diet more alkaline!<br />

One disease that many people don't consider - but which has been shown to severely shorten the lifespan of elderly people afflicted with it - is osteoporosis. This degenerative bone disease leads to falls, broken bones, decreased mobility, and ultimately, increased mortality.<br />
<br />
Many people believe that the primary cause of osteoporosis is a lack of calcium in their diet. However, in the overall picture, calcium is only a small piece of the puzzle. Though calcium supplements may sometimes help, there are other dietary concerns that need to be examined. <br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container zemanta-img" style="float: right; margin-right: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Soft_drink_shelf.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: clear:right;"><img alt="Soft drinks on shelves in a Woolworths superma..." border="0" class="zemanta-img-inserted zemanta-img-configured" height="200" src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/2a/Soft_drink_shelf.JPG/350px-Soft_drink_shelf.JPG" style="border: medium none; font-size: 0.8em;" width="250" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption zemanta-img-attribution" style="text-align: center; width: 250px;">Soft drinks. (Photo credit: <a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Soft_drink_shelf.JPG" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Actually, the primary dietary cause of osteoporosis is now believed to be the eating foods that are highly acidic in nature, such as refined white sugar, refined white flour, high-fructose corn syrup, soft drinks, cookies, candies, sweets, desserts, and anything containing processed sweeteners. The over-consumption of these products causes the pH level in your blood to become very acidic. In an attempt to counterbalance this, your body reaches out for any calcium and magnesium it can find, and releases those into your bloodstream in an attempt to keep the pH level at a healthy balance. <br />
<br />
Therefore, with every soft drink, candy, cake and goodie you indulge in, you are robbing your skeleton of its bone density. The calcium and magnesium the body harvests in an attempt to counteract this acidic environment gets passed through your kidneys, (where it can also contribute to kidney stones) and exits your body through your urine. To prevent losing your bone mass to dietary causes, simply avoid consuming any white flour, processed sugars, added sugars, soft drinks, sweets, candies, breads, or any other ingredients that are made with refined carbohydrates (which your body typically treats as sugars). <br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container zemanta-img" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Wirsingroulade.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: clear:right;"><img alt="cabbage rolls" border="0" class="zemanta-img-inserted zemanta-img-configured" height="293" src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/7f/Wirsingroulade.jpg/350px-Wirsingroulade.jpg" style="border: medium none; font-size: 0.8em;" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption zemanta-img-attribution" style="text-align: center; width: 300px;">Cabbage rolls (Photo credit: <a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Wirsingroulade.jpg" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
In addition, certain superfoods, like broccoli, cabbage, celery and other dark green leafy vegetables help keep the pH balance in a healthy equilibrium. You need to get plenty of calcium and magnesium from healthy sources such as organic, plant-based vitamins (don't overlook the magnesium - it's just as important as calcium for bone health, if not more so). You should also consider supplementing your diet with various sea vegetables, which are naturally alkaline. Those include seaweed, kelp, and many others. Sprouts are also an awesome superfood choice.<br />
<br />
By now you've probably noticed some common themes; eat lots of naturally healthy fruits and vegetables - particularly green and brightly colored ones, as well as other healthy whole foods, and avoid processed foods - particularly processed oils and sugars. By making just these few simple modifications in your daily diet, you can significantly reduce your odds of succumbing to some of today's deadliest diseases. Remember - your health is up to you! Recent estimates show approximately 4 million people in the U.S. have dementia, most with Alzheimer's disease. By 2050, that number could be as high as 16 million. This disease is devastating not only for those that are stricken with it, but for their families and loved ones. And it is one of the fastest growing diseases in the modern world. <br />
<br />
However, there is hope. In fact, just by making some simple adjustments in your diet to include foods high in folate, you can help reduce your risk. According to recent research, older adults whose diets were high in folate reduced their risk of Alzheimer's disease by half compared with those whose diets contain less than the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA).<br />
<br />
Folate has also been shown to lower blood levels of homocysteine, a risk factor for heart disease. High homocysteine levels, as well as decreased folate and vitamin B-12 levels, have also been associated with stroke and Alzheimer's disease.<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container zemanta-img" style="float: right; margin-right: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Ambersweet_oranges.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: clear:right;"><img alt="Ambersweet oranges, a new cold-resistant orang..." border="0" class="zemanta-img-inserted zemanta-img-configured" height="320" src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/43/Ambersweet_oranges.jpg/350px-Ambersweet_oranges.jpg" style="border: medium none; font-size: 0.8em;" width="280" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption zemanta-img-attribution" style="text-align: center; width: 280px;">(Photo credit: <a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Ambersweet_oranges.jpg" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
A healthy, well-balanced diet is your best option to get the folate you need. Be sure it includes <i>at least</i> five servings of fresh fruits and vegetables each day. Foods rich in folate include oranges and bananas, dark leafy green vegetables, asparagus, broccoli, liver, and many types of beans and peas, including lima, lentil and garbanzo, as well as some fortified whole-grain breads and cereals. <br />
<br />
The antioxidants in apples could help protect the brain from the type of damage that triggers Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, according to recent research. But it’s estimated that on average Americans only eat approximately one-seventh of an apple per day, nowhere near enough. If you have <a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&field-keywords=breville%20juicer&linkCode=ur2&sprefix=breville%20%2Caps%2C149&tag=newholliv-20&url=search-alias%3Daps&linkId=OQWP5XDYHHFVNZYX" target="_blank">a good-quality juicer,</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="https://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=newholliv-20&l=ur2&o=1" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /> try juicing fresh apples. The fresh, unpasteurized juice is delicious and full of vitamins. (You can even add some heart-healthy fiber to your diet by using the leftover apple pulp from your juicer to make breads and muffins.) <br />
<br />
Blueberries are an awesome food choice as well to arm your body to combat declining mental capacities. It’s also imperative to avoid processed vegetable oils and choose healthy natural fats instead so your circulatory system stays healthy. Research shows that oxidized fats (such as hydrogenated oils) cause inflammation that damages blood vessels and cell walls. Healthy blood flow and blood vessels lessen the chance of brain damage due to strokes or compromised circulation. <br />

However, certain foods, which we like to call "superfoods," are especially good for specific areas of our health. This week, we're discussing the nation’s second most deadly disease, cancer.<br />
<br />
There are certain nutrient-rich foods that are known to help reduce cancer risk. For example, a diet rich in fiber, vegetables, and fruits, including juices made from 100 percent fruit juice, can make a big difference in your cancer risk. <br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container zemanta-img" style="float: right; margin-right: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Broccoli_in_a_dish_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: clear:right;"><img alt="Studies show that broccoli may help in the pre..." border="0" class="zemanta-img-inserted zemanta-img-configured" height="299" src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/f3/Broccoli_in_a_dish_2.jpg/350px-Broccoli_in_a_dish_2.jpg" style="border: medium none; font-size: 0.8em;" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption zemanta-img-attribution" style="text-align: center; width: 300px;">Studies show that compounds found in broccoli may help in the prevention of cancer (Photo credit: <a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Broccoli_in_a_dish_2.jpg" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Foods rich in phytochemicals, which are found in beans and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, brussels sprouts, and kale, are strong choices. So are dark green leafy vegetables like spinach, romaine lettuce, and collard greens, which are packed with fiber, lutein, and carotenoids - all cancer-fighting substances.<br />
<br />
Focus on choosing foods that have abundant amounts of vitamins C, E, and A, all antioxidants themselves. These help protect you from cancer by preventing the growth of free radicals in your body.<br />
<br />
Tomatoes are an awesome cancer-fighting superfood. Not only do tomatoes contain lycopene, the antioxidant phytochemical that also helps prevent heart disease, but they're a good source of vitamins A, C, and E, all which do battle against cancer-causing free radicals. Add them to your salad or use as a topping on your homemade pizza. They’re also a great way of adding some zest to your favorite sandwich. <br />
<br />
Watermelon is also stuffed full of antioxidants, and includes a high percentage of vitamin C. It is also a great source of vitamin A, or beta carotene. And like tomatoes, it also contains lycopene. <br />
<br />
Cabbage is a cruciferous vegetable, which helps reduce the risk of colon and rectal cancer. Plus cabbage is rich in fiber and has almost 50 percent of daily requirement of vitamin C, making it a well-rounded superfood with cancer-fighting power. Carrots are also a wonderful source of fiber and beta carotene, and they have about three times the daily requirement of vitamin A.<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container zemanta-img" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Berries_%28USDA_ARS%29.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: clear:right;"><img alt="Several types of common "berries" ar..." border="0" class="zemanta-img-inserted zemanta-img-configured" height="320" src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/31/Berries_%28USDA_ARS%29.jpg/350px-Berries_%28USDA_ARS%29.jpg" style="border: medium none; font-size: 0.8em;" width="182" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption zemanta-img-attribution" style="text-align: center; width: 190px;">(Photo credit: <a href="http://commons.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Berries_%28USDA_ARS%29.jpg" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Strawberries and blueberries are rich in vitamin C and fiber. They’re
quick and simple finger food, and can easily be added to your favorite
whole grain cereal oatmeal or yogurt for a healthy and delicious breakfast.<br />
<br />
Did you know that one-quarter cup of kidney beans has the same amount of fiber and protein as two ounces of red meat? Whole wheat pasta is also a good source of fiber, and broccoli will tip the daily scales for your daily vitamin A and C needs. Toss them all together with your favorite Italian dressing with real olive oil, for a simple dinner with great cancer-fighting properties.<br />
<br />
You <i>can</i> lower your risk of diseases like cancer - just by choosing the right foods to eat. Your health is in your hands - take control, and make easy, delicious healthy choices that improve your odds of living a long, healthy life. Next week, we'll discuss some super-foods that may help combat another of the most deadly modern diseases - Alzheimer's disease. <br />
